What Are Summer Performance and UHP Tires?

Summer Performance Tires

Summer performance tires are built for warm weather driving and optimized for maximum handling, braking, and cornering on both dry and wet roads. Made with a stickier compound than all-season tires, summer tires grip the road more aggressively and offer strong hydroplane resistance in wet conditions. The tradeoff is that they're not designed for cold weather or winter conditions. Once temperatures drop below 45°F, the compound stiffens and grip drops off significantly. Don't drive in cold winter weather on summer tires.

Summer UHP Tires

Summer UHP (ultra-high performance) tires take warm weather performance a step further, especially for drivers who want maximum grip and handling on the street. They can handle track use, too. Like standard summer performance tires, UHP summer tires use a sticky compound optimized for warm weather, but with a softer formulation that delivers superior dry grip, sharper cornering, and higher speed ratings. They are typically W or Y rated for speed.

What's the Difference Between Summer Performance and Summer UHP?

The main differences between performance and UHP are grip, speed rating, and tread life.

  • UHP tires offer a higher level of dry grip and are built for more aggressive driving, as in hard cornering, high-speed braking, and sustained high speeds. The tradeoff is that the softer compound wears faster, making them a less practical choice for everyday commuting.
  • For most drivers, a standard summer performance tire hits the sweet spot between performance and longevity. If you're driving a sports car and want the best possible performance in warm weather, UHP is worth the investment.
