2026 Guide to Mud Terrain Tires for Trucks, Jeeps and SUVs

Buying Tires

We’ve compiled a guide to mud terrain tires that balance aggression, affordability, and performance. Whether you’re seeking the most aggressive tread for off-road dominance, the quietest ride for on-road comfort, or the best-looking options for style, we’ve got you covered.

Welcome to the best and brightest mud terrain tires. Who’s the most popular? Most likely to succeed on muddy roads? Best dressed for the trail? This is our list of picks for the best mud terrain tires for your budget and mudding needs

What are mud terrain tires? Mud terrain is a classification of tire tread that refers to high-traction and grip tires meant for traversing mud, loose snow, dirt, gravel, and more. They’re usually used on light trucks, SUVs, and Jeeps that are tackling tough off-road situations. The tires on this list each shine in their own unique way, but they represent only a few of the many mud tires available through Tire Agent.

To find a mud tire for your specific vehicle, from any page select “Shop By Vehicle.” Set your make, model, year, and trim level. Use the Tread Type filters to narrow your search to mud terrain, on/off road, and all terrain to find the tires that match your build.

In this example, we found 32 tires for a 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500HD by setting the Tread Type filter to Mud Terrain.

The jack-of-all-trades BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 may not be the cheapest nor most expensive, but it sits right in the middle as an overall great choice for an off-road enthusiast. Offered in a wider range of sizes, this mud-terrain tire is constructed with an advanced Krawl-TEK compound that enhances its grip on slick and rocky surfaces. It's also M+S rated for mud and snow traction (though it doesn't carry the 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake rating some winter-focused tires do). And of course, this tire is made for mud with special bars on the tire shoulders designed to release compacted mud for consistent traction.

Most Talented: Aggressive Mud Terrain Tires

All of the tires here are talented, but the aggressive design of the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss M/T takes the cake for extreme mud terrain designed for maximum traction and grip. You’ll find a unique asymmetric tread design that delivers better handling and ride quality, and lowers the overall road noise. The Baja Boss also ejects stones, pebbles, and mud that builds up between the tread blocks. The tough silica tread compound helps to maximize this tire’s lifespan and resists chips, cuts, and scratches. Available in very large diameters for larger builds.

Most Versatile: Best Mud Tire On and Off Road

Need a mud tire that’s not going to drive you crazy while driving on the road? The versatile Nitto Trail Grappler M/T balances its off-road performance with unique tread blocks designed to reduce overall noise level. According to Nitto, the size, shape, and position of the tread blocks have been tuned to be 34% quieter at street speeds and 36% quieter at highway speeds when compared to their Mud Grappler tire. Besides that, you’ve got a tough 3-ply sidewall with thick rubber construction to increase overall puncture resistance for absolute command of muddy and rocky terrain.

Most Shy: Quietest Mud Tires

If you didn’t notice the polite Falken WildPeak M/T tire, we don’t blame you! Its excellent on-road manners come from a variable three-pitch tread pattern that reduces road noise and vibration. Off the road, Falken’s patented DURASPEC technology endures tough, uncertain terrain and extra strong tread blocks push away excess rock and debris for enhanced stability and handling. The WildPeak M/T is also built with an aggressive upper sidewall that helps protect from extra damage.

Life of the Party: Cheapest Mud Tires

The Atturo Trail Blade M/T is the life of the party for one simple reason: price. Atturo is a known budget brand that holds its own in the mud terrain category. You’ll find an extra deep tread and a bevelled center tread to maintain grip off-road. It’s a great affordable choice that’s still going to have your back in all off-roading situations.

Most Friendly: Top Tires for Mud and Snow

Look, the Toyo Open Country M/T is a great tire that wants to be everyone’s friend. It’s got an aggressive tread design for perfect off-road, muddy traction and deep sipes that improve handling and grip in wet, loose terrain. However, even the friendliest, best mud tire is only going to be so good in snow. When the snow is loose and deep, the Toyo Open Country M/T will perform beautifully. In packed snow or on ice, this friendly guy will sadly be outclassed by a dedicated winter tire. Regardless, it’s still a great versatile hybrid choice for winter and summer off-roading.

If we’ve got you worried about the snow now, consider a rugged terrain tire. Check out the Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac RT, a 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake-rated tire designed for severe winter weather. Constructed with DuPont Kevlar for extra strength and Durawall technology to absorb punctures and cuts, this is a true off-road winter tire. It also features a full-depth, interlocking tread pattern with biting edges designed to grip snow and ice.

Best Dressed: Best Looking Mud Tire

The Nitto Mud Grappler is about the meanest, toughest looking tire out there. It even comes with a lizard skin option. What a stunner! It features a very high void ratio between the tread blocks that throws out all that excess mud and dirt from beneath the tire, and a hyper-aggressive sidewall tread that’s designed for rocky terrain and deep mud. It’s also constructed with a 3-ply puncture-resistant polyester sidewall. Remember this though: the meanest, toughest tire is also going to be the loudest on the road!

Most Likely to Succeed: Longest Lasting Mud Tires

Wait… why isn’t there anyone here?

Here’s the catch with mud tires: They’re not known for being the longest lasting. There’s a reason that most don’t come with a limited mileage warranty. If you’re concerned about squeezing as many miles as possible out of your tires, consider all-terrain or rugged-terrain tires. You’ll be sacrificing that mud performance for more on-road longevity. But, if you really are looking for a long-lasting mud tire, your best shot may be the aforementioned Toyo Open Country M/T. When searching for longest lasting mud tires, user reviews often cite the Open Country M/T.

FAQs About Mud Terrain Tires

Click Shop Tires and Wheels on any page of our site to get started. Enter your make, model, year, and trim information to see hundreds of tire options for your build, including dozens of mud tires. How much are mud tires?

Expect to pay on average between $200 to $400 per tire for your mud tires. This price will vary depending on the size, brand, and availability.

Are mud tires good for mud bogging?

We’d say that mud tires are essential for mud bogging, as there’s no way a street tire will stand a chance against the slippery, uneven mud and dirt pits you’ll be facing for mud bogging. But, the tires we listed above balance on-road and mud terrain performance and may not necessarily be the best choice for a dedicated mud competition tire. You’ll need an even heavier-duty tire for something like that.

Can you drive mud terrain tires every day or on the highway?

Yes, it’s possible to drive mud terrain tires every day on the road or highway. It’s going to come at a price though! Mud terrain tires wear down quickly while driving on the road and you may be burning those precious miles outside of their intended purpose. Also, mud terrain tires are known for being noisy and uncomfortable on the road. We don’t usually recommend frequent drives on the highway with your mud tires.

What size mud tires fit my truck or Jeep?

The right size depends on your vehicle's wheel well clearance, suspension, and whether it's lifted. Many trucks and Jeeps can run a moderately larger mud tire on stock suspension, but going up to 35" or 37" fitments usually requires a lift and sometimes trimming or re-gearing to avoid rubbing. Use "Shop By Vehicle" to enter your year, make, model, and trim and see tires that fit.

*Prices subject to change. Warranties may differ depending on tire size and speed ratings. To find the best fit for your truck, Jeep or SUV, select Shop Tires and Wheels and enter your vehicle information.
